Macon-Bibb's $75 Ordinance Is Not a Legal Shield. The ordinance commissioners passed in May 2019 lets officers write a $75 citation for less than an ounce, but they can still charge under state law, where possession is a misdemeanor with up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine (OCGA 16-13-2). It stops at the Bibb County line, so it does not apply in Warner Robins, Gray, or Forsyth. A Georgia Medical Cannabis card makes lawful medical cannabis legal to carry everywhere in the state.

What Conditions Qualify for a Medical Marijuana Card in Macon?

Macon patients qualify under the 18 conditions the Georgia Department of Public Health listed as of July 1, 2026. Tags show where an age limit or severity rule applies.

Each tag opens Georgia's exact rule for that condition, and the qualifying conditions guide covers the full list. Parents asking about a child's diagnosis get a clear answer from Dr. Miller early in the call.

Who Gets a Medical Marijuana Card in Macon?

Macon uses the same statewide list, and this page focuses on three groups of Middle Georgia patients.

👨‍👩‍👧
Parents of Children With Seizures or Autism
Many Middle Georgia families already see specialists at Beverly Knight Olson Children's Hospital. Seizure disorders and autism spectrum disorder are on Georgia's list. A parent or guardian registers as the child's caregiver.
🎖️
Veterans Managing PTSD
Middle Georgia veterans use the Macon VA Clinic on Thomaston Road, a Carl Vinson VA Medical Center clinic. VA providers will not certify, yet their records carry weight with Dr. Miller, and PTSD qualifies for adults 18 and over.
🏥
Patients in Care at Macon Hospitals
Patients treated at Atrium Health Navicent or Piedmont Macon for cancer, sickle cell disease, or intractable pain often already have the records the evaluation needs. Bring notes that show what you have already tried.
Not qualifying conditions in Georgia: anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraines, or arthritis alone. Pain has to be intractable, which means it has not improved with treatment. Told no before July 2026? SB 220 dropped some "severe" and "end-stage" limits and added lupus, so it may be worth asking again.

What to Bring and How Long It Takes in Macon

Plan on a few weeks from video visit to card in hand. Documents, not the doctor or DPH, are what usually hold a Macon file up.

🪪

ID That Shows Your Current Address

Your Georgia driver's license or state ID should show your current Macon address. Students and others with an out-of-state license, a passport, or a military ID should add a utility bill, phone bill, medical bill, or pay stub with their name and Georgia street address.

📋

Proof of Your Diagnosis and Medications

Visit notes, imaging, or labs from Atrium Health Navicent, Piedmont Macon, or a child's specialist help Dr. Miller confirm the condition. Keep a current medication list handy, since cannabis can change how some prescriptions are processed.

Macon has thousands of college students and many families tied to Robins Air Force Base. If your license is from another state or shows an old address, bring a bill or pay stub with your Georgia address to the call so DPH does not send your file back.

Can Your Macon Doctor Certify You? Atrium Health Navicent, Piedmont Macon, and the VA

Most Macon patients ask their own doctor first. This is what to expect from the major local options.

🏥

Your Doctor Can, but Many Do Not

Any physician fully licensed in Georgia with a principal practice in the state may certify a qualifying patient, and no separate cannabis license exists. Still, many doctors at Atrium Health Navicent and Piedmont Macon do not offer it.

🎖️

The Macon VA Clinic Cannot Certify You

Under VHA Directive 1315, providers at the Thomaston Road clinic and the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center cannot complete state cannabis forms, yet enrolling in a state program does not cost you VA services. Share your VA records with Dr. Miller instead.

✈️

Military Providers at Robins

Base medical staff care for Airmen under rules that prohibit marijuana, so they will not certify anyone. Dependents and retirees can still bring records from base care to their evaluation.

💊

Tell Your Care Team Anyway

Even if another physician certified you, tell your Macon doctors that you are registered. Some blood thinners and seizure medications interact with cannabis, and a complete medication list keeps you safe.

Your Macon Medical Marijuana Doctor: Named, Licensed, and Verifiable

If medical cannabis makes sense, he certifies the patient the same day. If it does not, he explains his reasoning and the evaluation fee is refunded. Read Dr. Miller's full profile.

Where Can You Buy Medical Cannabis in Macon?

Macon was one of the first two Georgia cities with a licensed dispensary, in April 2023, and now has two licenses. The state's only independent cannabis testing lab is also in Macon.

🪪
What You Can Buy Since July 1, 2026: oils, tinctures, capsules, lotions, and transdermal patches, with vaporizer products, including flower meant for vaporization, limited to patients 21 and older. That age rule matters for Mercer and Middle Georgia State students. Smoking and food-style edibles remain illegal, and products belong in their labeled container with your card nearby.

Before You Apply: Robins Air Force Base, Your Job, and Drug Tests

A Georgia card protects you from state criminal charges for legal possession. It does not protect your job or your military career, and many Macon residents commute to Robins Air Force Base.

✈️

Active-Duty Airmen

Robins Airmen are subject to Air Force drug testing and the military's marijuana ban, and a state card does not override either. If you serve on active duty, do not apply.

🏛️

Civilian Employees and Contractors at Robins

Robins civilians and defense contractors work under federal drug-free workplace rules, which ignore state cannabis cards, and cannabis use can put a clearance at risk. Check with your security officer or an employment attorney first.

💼

No Employment Protection in Georgia

Georgia gives medical cannabis patients no protection at work. A Macon employer can test for THC and act on a positive result even if you hold a valid card, and DOT-regulated drivers on the I-75 and I-16 corridors are not covered.

🗺️

The Card Stays in Georgia

Your card covers possession in Georgia only. Never take medical cannabis onto Robins Air Force Base, onto a plane, or across state lines.

💬
Your job comes up on the call. For many Macon patients a card is the right move, but for Airmen, some federal employees, and DOT-regulated drivers it often is not. We would rather say so before you pay.

Cherry Street, the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, and the Atrium Health Navicent campus. Fit the video evaluation into a lunch break downtown.

📍 East Macon (31217)

Macon Medical Marijuana Card Questions Answered

Questions Macon patients ask that the rest of the page does not answer.

No. The Macon-Bibb County ordinance passed on May 21, 2019 lets officers issue a $75 citation for less than an ounce of marijuana, but they can still charge under Georgia state law (OCGA 16-13-2), where possession is a misdemeanor with up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. The ordinance does not apply outside Bibb County, including Warner Robins. As of September 2026, only a card from the Georgia Department of Public Health Medical Cannabis Patient Registry makes medical cannabis legal to carry.
According to the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission license list updated September 16, 2026, Macon has two licensed dispensaries: Trulieve, license DISP0001, which opened in April 2023 as one of Georgia's first two dispensaries, and Fine Fettle, license DISP0022, licensed on September 16, 2026, which may not be open yet. Independent pharmacies licensed by the Georgia Board of Pharmacy to dispense low THC oil can also serve Macon patients.
Not if they are active duty. As of September 2026, Airmen at Robins Air Force Base stay under military drug testing and the marijuana ban, and federal civilian employees and contractors answer to federal drug-free workplace rules that do not recognize the Georgia Medical Cannabis Patient Registry. The base is federal property, so medical cannabis never goes on base. Macon residents in other jobs can apply.
Only if they are Georgia residents. As of September 2026, the Georgia Department of Public Health issues Medical Cannabis Patient Registry cards only to Georgia residents, so students whose legal residence is in another state do not qualify. Under Senate Bill 220, effective July 1, 2026, patients under 21 cannot buy vaporizer products, though oils, tinctures, capsules, lotions, and patches remain available.
Yes. Under Georgia DPH rules in effect since SB 220 on July 1, 2026, a patient under 18 with a qualifying condition, such as a seizure disorder or autism spectrum disorder, joins the Georgia Medical Cannabis Patient Registry through a parent, guardian, or legal custodian who holds a caregiver card. The certifying physician adds the caregiver during the same process, and each caregiver card costs $30 plus the $3.75 portal fee.
Yes. As of September 2026, the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission licenses SJ Labs and Analytics in Macon, license LAB0001, as the only independent testing laboratory on its license list. GMCC describes licensed dispensaries as the retail locations for laboratory tested products, and Macon has two licensed dispensaries.

Ready to Get Your Macon Medical Marijuana Card?

Macon-Bibb's ordinance lowers a local fine, but it does not make cannabis legal, and it stops at the county line. A Georgia Medical Cannabis card is the only legal route. The evaluation takes about 15 minutes by video, and if you are not certified, you get your money back.
